We want to create a seamless digital trail network for all long-distance hiking trails in Europe. The foundation will be a standardized, open data format that goes far beyond map displays (e.g., on OpenStreetMap). All daily stages should be digitized based on a uniform data structure and combined into a cohesive network. This data can then be used across all outdoor, mapping, and navigation platforms.

We’ve already compiled the long-distance trails currently available on Outdooractive into a collection. However, many trails and connections are still missing; often, there are no daily stages or the information provided is insufficient.

Please let us know if we’ve overlooked your long-distance trail. If your trail is still missing, you can add it to Outdooractive for free and send us the link; we’ll then add your trail to the collection.

We also plan to launch a series of funding projects based on this within Project Group 8. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to collaborate with the project group on shaping the future of official long-distance hiking trails in Europe.
