European Trails is rolling out the completely revised Green Flag Trails 2.0 across Europe and launching the first training to introduce the updated system.

The Assessment Training
The training covers all five GFT assessment categories. For now, it focuses on what a trail organization needs to do to meet Green Flag Trails requirements.

What will you learn?
Turn the GFT 2.0 criteria into practical insights for your trails through classroom learning, fieldwork and group discussion.
- Understand the brief history of GFT and its development — how the original Green Flag Trails system evolved into GFT 2.0
- Understand the five assessment categories — explore trail management, design and features, information and safety, environmental responsibility, and heritage and community impact
- Apply the criteria on a real trail — practise observing trail conditions, spotting issues and assessing them objectively using the GFT framework
- Record and interpret your findings — learn how ratings work, document observations clearly and analyse results across the five categories
- Identify practical improvements — recognise strengths and gaps, and use your findings to prioritise improvements to your trail and its management
- Understand the route to certification — learn how self-assessment supports preparation and how independent assessment and GFT approval fit into the proces

- 3 full days of training in Garda Trentino (1–3 December 2026): Day 1 – Theory & Framework, Day 2 – Field Practice & Analysis, Day 3 – Evaluation & Assessment
- Lunch included on all three days

Learn in Garda Trentino
The first GFT 2.0 assessment training takes place in Garda Trentino, one of Europe’s leading trail destinations.

Price: €1,000 per participant, excluding VAT and travel costs
Group size: Minimum 8, maximum 12 participants
Participants must attend all three days and bring a laptop, suitable outdoor footwear and hiking clothing. Registered participants will receive further details about the venue, suggested accommodation and transport before the training.
GFT 2.0 Assessment Training
Programme
Day 1 — Theory and framework
Explore the GFT system, auditing methods and global standards in a full-day classroom session.
Day 2 — Practical trail assessment
Carry out a trail audit in the morning, followed by data analysis and group discussion in the afternoon.
Day 3 — Assessment and feedback
Complete a test combining fieldwork and office work, followed by evaluation, scoring and a final debrief.
